Behind The Scenes stories of working on a DreamWorks Animation film
Recently, Platt College had the privilege to traverse the grid with Digital Domain, the folks behind Disney’s VFX powerhouse movie, Tron Legacy. This event is OPEN to all students and alumni of Platt College San Diego.
Taking various cues from their past work on The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, the team at Digital Domain was able to render an uncanny image of Jeff Bridges similar to his appearance in the 1982 film Tron. Using some of the latest camera techniques, Platt and Wittmann explained the intricate steps they took to develop more than 350 cial motions and over 165 animation scenes of CLU to match Jeff Bridges’ motions. Platt and Wittmann were also responsible for some of the digital versions of Sam Flynn (Garrett Hedlund), Quorra (Olivia Wilde), and Tron (Bruce Boxleitner) within the film as well.
The presentation started with a bang as Daft Punk’s heart-thumping beats hyped all attendees for the wonders to come. Inspiration radiated forth as Dan Platt, Lead Modeler at Digital Domain, and Matthias Wittmann, Lead Animator at Digital Domain, showcased an eight minute documentary, detailing some of the visual effects composition and modeling treatment Digital Domain bestowed onto the film. From there, our presenters delivered a two hour tour de force break down of the film’s antagonist, CLU.

Animation/Modeling Processes
Keep learningand practicing doing personal work to evolve, however the most important adviceI could give is that you must share your work and knowledge. Make sure you putyourself out there using services like Flickr, Behance, Deviantart, Dribbbleand others, that is the easiest way to get into graphic design and to promoteyourself.
It has been a crazy journey indeed. I do recommend internships for anyone who is able. Three months is the usual length, and at the end you might get a contract. If not, you’ve gained three months of on the job experience that can go a long way in your next job interview. Platt played a big role in my career as well, mostly due to people I went to class with. It was my network of friends that threw me leads for gigs here and there. Also Platt’s curriculum prepared me for what was to come.
They will also discuss their apprentices and internship programs for students hoping to get real world experience prior to graduation!

Although our talented team design their sculpture on ahead of time, the true challenge begins on the sand when only ten team members must coordinate their efforts, communicate well and keep their big picture vision in mind to finish successfully. On the day of the event, with the judges and the ever-constant crowd watching, the sand sculpture must be completed within the allotted 5 hour time frame. This year the team sculpted a giant octopus which had taken a boat captive breaking it in half. The sculpture and boat was dubbed the USS Drowning Man.

Victor and his amazing team welcome all Platt students who would like to offer support at the 2012 competition. In addition to the team, we will be looking for enthusiastic students to be our cheerleaders, water bearers and general helpers. As a friendly reminder the Platt sculpting team consists of only 10 members and spots fill up st. So whether you make the 2012 team of sculptors, general supports and just come out to watch the team in action, let’s all participate in 2012 and help the Platt College team take the competition to the next level and win FIRST PLACE in 2012!
We are extremely proud of the cohesive effort our Platt Students put forth during the competition. Headed by Victor Silva, his team led us into Second Place victory two years in a row. In viewing their amazing results you can tell their Digital Media Design training and Bachelor Degrees in Media Arts, definitely paid off!
Some students called this ensemble cast The Avengers and all felt in awe and inspired. Various topics were discussed throughout the summit, ranging from the development of resumes to the importance of an industry internship. Portfolio dialogue was the core topic of the summit, where panelists discussed presentations of student portfolios and relating it towards the variety of digital media design industry backgrounds present at the summit. They stressed the importance of displaying only the best work when presenting a portfolio and always exhibiting a professional demeanor. Furthermore, the guest panelist spoke frankly about what to avoid when showcasing and provided great insight into the common mistakes often made by new comers to the industry.

Presented by the kind folks at Sony Online Entertainment, the Art & Design of DC Universe Online presentation was not to be missed. Visual Director, Mat Broome gave a digital guided tour of what it took to create an immersive massive multiplayer online title that lived up to the DC Comics brand. The presentation showcased various concept sketches of what Metropolis would look like in a game environment versus the comic form. Broome explained that the world they created had never really been shown in comics. So the task was to design specific details of everything in the city, from railways, government buildings to a burger shack.
I have neverthought that Abduzeedo would grow or get popular, that is the reality. My onlygoal was to share things that inspire me and also things that I learn along theway. I believe that is why the blog grew so much. The goal was never to be bigbut to be useful at least to myself.

A greatdesigner in my opinion is the one that understands that we are designing somethingwith a target audience in mind and not to other designers or ourselves, we arenot artists in this matter, we do not express ourselves in our designs. We aresimply the middleman between the client and the consumer, and our goal is tomake the communication between them as clear and efficient as possible.
Due to the nature of the event, RSVP is required.

Fabio Sasso began as designer in 1995-96. He obtained his degree in graphicdesign and continued to work professionally since 1998 in Brazil. He and hisfriend, Fabiano Meneghetti, currently run a small web design studio named Zee.In
Details of the Workshop:
It depends on the discipline, I guess. If you’re a modeler, you better know Photoshop and know it well. Zbrush, Vue, and Mudbox are definite pluses. Maybe some knowledge of UV unwrap software will come in handy. For animators, I’ve seen Motion Builder being used, but usually it’s just Maya animation. realFlow for dynamics people goes a long way. Also, for any discipline, it’s good to know how to slap a composite together either in After Effects, Shake, or any available composite program.

Before I even get to the office, I know exactly what I’m going to tackle that first few hours. I work in a room with 6 other artists. There is never a dull moment in there. During work, I have a task list that I try to get done. Sometimes things come up, also known as fires, and someone has to put them out. Sometimes, they’re small fires, other times they can be big. They can happen at any moment and are to be avoided! Usually I’ll just joke with the guys as I get work done as the day goes on. Most studios will buy lunches and dinners for the artists during projects that run long. So throughout the day we’ll take breaks, chill, and eat.

Character animators are at the mercy of the client. Whatever the client wants is what the animation supervisor is going to tell you to do. For the most part, there is little freedom for animators, Motion Capture (mocap) being one of them. Some projects are mocap driven, which means animators might be cleaning up motion capture. Also, it can be a real bummer when the client doesn’t like what you like.
Join us on October 26th as we welcome one of the leading studios behind popular films such as A-Team, The Incredible Hulk, Lord of the Rings Saga, Chronicles of Narnia, and the upcoming X-Men First Class!Rhythm & Hues Studios will be presenting studio info, demo reels (do and don’ts), portfolio overviews, and most importantly what you have to do to get hired!

For starters, I am a native San Diegan who loves the Chargers, super sad about LT. After a comment by my sister, I checked out Platt and totally dug the environment. I broke into the industry by becoming an awesome video game tester. A tip by a peer at Platt pointed me in the direction of game testing for Sony Computer Entertainment America San Diego in Sorrento Mesa. I did that for a couple of months then moved across the street to the development division. After a referral from a classmate, I interviewed for an internship that led to working with veterans from the movie business. Later on, they called me up to Los Angeles for my first Visual Effects job. There were some challenges early on with contract work ending and having months of down time. I recommend the every artist to save their dough after their first gig. That job can be gone at any moment if you’re a contractor. Life as a freelancer can be tough.

Yeah, that ispart of our lives as creators right, however I believe most of the times thatwe have this writers block is because we do not have enoughinformation about what we have to do.
Recognizability is the glue that holds an IP together. Ideally every element in a game from the smallest plants to creatures to the user inter…ce should have a distinct style that players will associate with the title even when viewed outside the game world. This kind of recognizability requires a strong consistent visual style and a commitment from all stakeholders to continually uphold it. The development of the style begins with the core game, encompassing characters, environments, UI and FX. It then extends into cross departmental collaboration between the Developers, Marketing, PR, Web presence and all outsourcing. Doing this successfully requires attention to key elements that will be discussed in this presentation.
